The state IT Department has completed the West
Bengal State Wide Area Net Work (WBSWAN) project, a 2 Mbps Optical
Fibre Cable (OFC) network for data, voice and image communication.
It provides the backbone for networking e-Governance projects,
currently connecting the State Capital with all district headquarters.
Connectivity to eight more industrially and educationally important
towns for facilities of distance learning, tele-medicine and other
e-Governance projects will be given by June 2003. Eventually,
the network will extend to all 341 blocks and 3660 local administrative
bodies (panchayats).

The IT Department endeavours to connect SSKM
Hospital to Bankura Medical College and hospital or North Bengal
College and hospital. Ultimately all district hospitals are to
be connected to state-of-the-art hospitals in Kolkata.
The state has also introduced significant computerisation
at various levels in several Government Departments and Directorates
including the Departments of Finance, Labour, Transport, Panchayat
and Rural Development, Land and Land Reforms, Information and
Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Forest, Youth Services, Municipal Affairs,
Higher Education, School Education, Environment, Housing etc.

has been updated and all departments have been asked to put up
important Acts, Rules, Forms etc on this website. 80 information
kiosks have been installed in the districts from where information
can be downloaded. The networking of different offices of the
Commercial Tax Department for collection of Sales Tax has been
implemented

Future Plans
WBSWAN infrastructure to connect important towns
like Asansol, Durgapur, Kalyani, Kharagpur, Haldia, Siliguri,
Bolpur and Alipurduar.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is carrying out
a systems analysis of 47 Government Departments to identify and
prioritise automation requirements to enable more efficient and
transparent functioning of departments. Work at 14 departments
has been completed.
More kiosks at important places to help citizens
get quick assistance from the Government using WBSWAN infrastructure.
Exclusive Education Portal students of colleges,
schools, polytechnics, ITI’s. etc. is under implementation.
Computerization of all Government Departments
Thrust to be given for development of hardware
sector i.e. components industry, embedded technology etc.
Fund management system for Panchayat Rural Development
Department will be introduced by December 2003.
An online booking system for reservation of Tourist
lodges of the state’s Tourism Department will be introduced
by May 2003.
