An important requirement for the IT sector is the ready availability
of business space with state-of-the-art support infrastructure.
WEBEL has been continuously keeping space readily available for
prospective entrepreneurs. Towards this end, they set up the Salt
Lake Electronic Complex (SALTLEC), India’s first fully integrated
electronics complex in the country, in Salt Lake, which is The
hub for all IT and ITES related activities is the new Satellite
Township of Salt Lake on the eastern fringe of the metropolis,
close to the international airport.
This 150-acre, pollution free, hi-tech industrial zone has been
designed to provide companies with world-class start-up services
and facilities. The area, only 12 km from the international airport,
has residential accommodation conveniently available in nearby
Salt Lake, which offers modern housing at very competitive rates.
160 companies employ over 13,000 people in SALTLEC, where world-class
institutions, training and research centres and major enterprises
from India and overseas are located.

- Two international gateway satellite earth stations - operated
by VSNL with immediate availability of around 70% of installed
bandwidth
- dvanced telecom network (ISDN) with dedicated exchange

Building, Software Technology Park II, INFINITY and Bengal Intelligent
Centre with over 2 million sq.ft. of built-up space ready for
occupation. Individual plots of land are also available to investors
at highly subsidised rates of less than 20% of the prevailing
market price. New 40-acre ITES Park coming up soon.
- National Test Laboratories for Electronics and India’s
only Indo-German Vocational Training Centre for Electronics

The ready-to-use spaces that have already been constructed
include:
- A 2,50,000-sq.ft. Standard Design Factory (STP1), provided
under the Software Technology Park (STP) scheme, was the initial
core of the SALTLEC Hub.
- The newly opened (STP2) with 65,000-sq.ft. built-up area allotted
to software companies.
- INFINITY – the 2 Towers are high productivity, fully
intelligent workplaces. Tower 1 has 130,000 sq.ft. on 12 floors
and is fully occupied. Tower 2 with 190,000 sq.ft. on 17 floors
is under construction.
- Bengal Intelligent Park comprises 5 low-rise buildings, offering
about 55,000 sq.ft. each, spread over 5 acres. The first phase,
with fully integrated facilities of international standards,
is fully occupied. 50,000 se ft Phase II is also now complete
and fully occupied and Phase III will begin shortly.
- A third Software Technology Park (STP-3) is being built.
- Two new IT Habitats are coming up at Kalyani and Durgapur.

WEBEL also offers plots of land on easy terms in the SALTEC area.
As this area is rapidly filling up, the state has earmarked two
areas, very close by, for future expansion. One is in the adjoining
area of the New Kolkata township of Rajarhat and the other is
at Nonadanga. In the New Kolkata Township of Rajarhat, Webel proposes
to initially create 1 million square feet dedicated infrastructure
for IT and ITES units over 10 acres of land. Webel has nominated
CB Richard Ellis to be the Project Management Consultant.

IT Majors have their own facilities. Some new ones are
- WIPRO has begun construction of their new Development Centre
at SALTLEC. This Rs50 Crore facility is slated for completion
by December 2003 and will house ITES activities and IT Services.
- IBM Global Services have announced they are establishing a
200 seat Software Development Centre for export purposes. It
is worth noting that IBM have made a global acquisition of Pricewaterhouse
Coopers’ IT consulting wing and are expected to introduce
BPO operations for their overseas clients. Some of these operations
will be conducted from the Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PWC) building
and facilities in SALTLEC.
- The Reliance Group has agreed to set up the Dhirubhai Ambani
Institute of Information and Technology, a Centre of Excellence
in IT. They are also in negotiations to set up a 500 seat call
centre, a Telecom engineering centre with R&D facilities
and other IT infrastructure on 100 acres of land, a "Knowledge
City".
- Samsung India Ltd. have collaborated with WEBEL and Syntech
to set up a hardware integration unit under their "Build
your PC" initiative.

majors seriously considering investments in IT in Kolkata are
- Nexgenix, Manjushree Infotech (B.K.Birla Group Company) and
Indicon Management Pvt.Ltd. have finalised plans for setting
up call centres and BPO operations in the coming months.
- Existing investors like TCS, Cognizant and PWC have definite
plans to diversify into BPO operations in the city.
- GE Capital have announced that Kolkata is " highest on
their minds" for their next call centre in India.
- Dialogues have been initiated with L&T Infotech, AIG and
Unilever to begin operations in Kolkata.
