Waterways
West Bengal is a riverine state with many rivers and rivulets, waterways
and man made canals, being in the estuary of the mighty River Ganges.
A large portion (580 km) of National Waterways I (NW1) fall within
the state as it races down to Bay of Bengal. Other rivers, both
perennial and seasonal add up to a total of over 3800 km, most of
which is navigable.
ICICI Winfra has been deeply committed to help the state and the
Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in their efforts to increase
the usage of these waterways in a meaningful way for passenger and
cargo movement and for tourism purposes. Towards this end, the Company
has been studying all the waterways in the state and trying to understand
how best to utilize them through financially viable projects. ICICI
Winfra is developing a BOT project for utilization of the North
Canal system in Kolkata for navigation purposes and is exploring
the feasibility of starting a river cruise project on the Hoogly
river. Thus it is well positioned to render advice and necessary
assistance to clients who wish to understand the details of the
investment opportunities in this sector in a professional manner.
