Formed in 1968, TCS is India’s largest IT Company; Asia’s
largest global software and Services Company; and the sixth fastest
growing consultancy organization in the world. Set up in 1976,
TCS Kolkata is the largest ISO certified software house in eastern
India. It engineers some of the world’s most complex applications
and next generation information technology infrastructure, by
combining in-depth knowledge of diverse business domains with
expertise across various technologies. The Kolkata branch handles
assignments in virtually all IT areas, including, but not limited
to, e-business strategy and e-architecture, ERP implementation,
application development, porting and migrations, re-engineering,
new software development, and maintenance of existing systems.
TCS Kolkata has 6 dedicated Offshore Development Center.
In early 2000, TCS Kolkata was assessed at SEI - CMM Level 5,
the highest achievable worldwide standard in IT consultancy profession.
In August 2001, 4 of its center’s including Kolkata were
assessed and TCS became the world’s first PCMM Level 4 company.
TCS has got the largest number of CQAs in the world. TCS has
over 1300 CQAs, out of which 150 CQAs are from Kolkata branch.
Kolkata branch also has 2 CMM Lead, 35 Assessors, 3 PCMM Assessors,
1 Six Sigma – Green Belt and 5 TBEM Examiners.
The company currently employs around 1,800 persons in Kolkata.
In terms of office space, they are located in TCS New Building
at SALTLEC occupying 130,000 sq.ft, the office at SDF Building,
SALTLEC, has 28,000 sq. ft., and the one at ITC Centre is spread
over 12,000 sq. ft. TCS has acquired a plot of 1.7485 acres area
adjacent to its New Building.
During the first 10 months of year 2002-03 (upto January) the
turnover of its Kolkata operations, as registered under STP was
Rs 2572 million. This is a tremendous jump from the export turnover
registered with STP for the entire 2001-02 of Rs. 1868 million.
They also have sizeable export turnover, which is not captured
in the STP figures.

TCG Software Services (TCGSS), a part of the US based US $2.0
Billion TCG Fund Management Group, is a leading provider of IT
services catering to US, Middle-East, India and South-east Asian
markets. As a software services organization, the Company’s
focus is on building capabilities for end-to-end delivery of IT
solutions to global customers. Founded in 1995, TCGSS has grown
to a size of more than 800 professionals, with offices spanning
12 locations across the globe.
While TCGSS has been operational in Kolkata since 1995, its The
Salt Lake Centre, a 272,000-sq.ft facility in SALTLEC has been
operational since 2001. It currently employs 300 persons. The
Centre was established with the objective of providing state of
the art technology solutions through software development using
the latest development tools and up-to-date training. TCGSS in
Kolkata is active in web based applications, application reengineering,
enabling business processes, portal / site designing & hosting,
development of complex clinical applications and development of
integrated application systems for large multinational corporations.
The Centre is equipped with two parallel E1 (1 Mbps) lines, connected
directly to an upstream Internet Service Provider’s satellite
uplink. They provide high speed Internet access and form the backbone

communication and workflow. Thus the software development operations
can be carried out seamlessly at Salt Lake by keeping in constant

the company recorded an export turnover of Rs. 130 million. Export
turnover for the year 2001-02 was Rs 180.4 million. (up from Rs.
70.6 million during the entire 12 month period in the previous
year). The Company is very proud that the attrition rate of employees
for the last three years has been 6%, 8% and 8% respectively.
This compares very favorably against an industry average of 22%-25%
in the Indian software industry in the past three years.

In the first 10-month period of year 2002-03 (upto January),
the company recorded an export turnover of Rs 148.2 million, substantially
up from Rs 95.3 million for the entire year 2001-02.

The Chatterjee Group has tied up with the world’s largest
airline, United Airlines to set up SkyTech Solutions in Kolkata.
SkyTech focuses on IT requirements of United Airlines. SkyTech’s
Kolkata development centre is the 5th IT Centre of United Airlines,
after Chicago, Los Angles, Denver and San Francisco and it is
their only centre outside the US.
SkyTech’s core strength lies in its domain knowledge of
the airline, transportation and logistics industries. SkyTech
is also aggressively targeting other airlines in providing IT
services and e-commerce solutions.
The Company has made an investment of Rs 40 million in its Kolkata
Development Centre, which started operations in the year 2001.
The company currently employs around 150 persons. SkyTech is in
the expansion mode. It is planning to make an additional investment
of Rs 3 million in the forthcoming three months and employ 50
more persons. The company has already opened an office in China
and will open an office in South Africa shortly.
Export turnover in the year 2002-03 (upto January) was Rs 117.6
million. For previous financial year 20001 – 02, the exports
were valued at Rs. 162.7 million.

Wipro, the leading Indian Information Technology Company providing
solutions across the globe to Fortune 500 companies, is setting
up a software development centre in Salt Lake at an estimated
cost of Rs 400 million. The state government has already allotted
12 acres of land to them in Salt Lake. The company plans to employ
2500 software professionals in the Kolkata Unit.
